They were written during his service as a chaplain to the forces in France, Belgium, and, after the Armistice, in Germany. Leonard served through the Great War with the infantry and Royal Flying Corps. Along with the many hundreds of letters he wrote to the relatives of those 'parishioners' who died or were wounded, he found time to describe for his parents back home the awful reality of life in the trenches. Later he wrote from the Royal Flying Corps' makeshift aerodromes which, despite the great danger of aerial combat, 'liberated his spirit' from the mud of Flanders"--Jacket 600 10 Leonard, Pat,|d1889-1963|vCorrespondence 610 10 Great Britain.|bArmy|xChaplains|vCorrespondence 610 10 Great Britain.|bArmy|xMilitary life|xHistory|y20th century 610 10 Great Britain.|bArmy.|bKing's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) 610 10 Great Britain.|bRoyal Flying Corps 650 0 Military chaplains|zGreat Britain|vCorrespondence 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|xChaplains|zGreat Britain 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|vPersonal narratives, British 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|xTrench warfare 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|xRegimental histories|zGreat Britain 650 7 Första världskriget 1914-1918|2sao 651 4 Storbritannien 655 7 Personliga berättelser|2saogf 655 7 Dagböcker|2saogf 700 1 Leonard, John,|cCBE 700 1 Leonard-Johnson, Philip
